Choosing the right illuminator for fiber optic side glow

Filed under: Fiber optic lights — @ 3:41 pm

We get a lot of questions about using the right fiber optic illuminator for fiber optic side glow cable. Here are a few tips and suggestions for choosing the right illuminator for side glow cable.

1. We always recommend a 150 metal halide illuminator for all side glow applications, if you can afford it, its even better to use a 250 watt metal halide illuminator.

2. Fiber optic side glow cable will not work with traditional light bulb. We have had a few customers who have tried this and ended up melting their cable. Fiber optic illuminators are specifically built to keep the cable cool and prevent the cable from melting.

3. For side glow applications you can do one of the following: 50 foot in one direction or a 100 foot loop. In other words for the loop, you will have to start and end the fiber in the illuminator. If you use a 250 watt illuminator you can push it out to 60 foot in one direction or one 120 foot loop.

4. If you find that you need more than one illuminator due to distance, we have synchronous illuminators and even DMX illuminators.

5. Make sure you understand the illuminator you are purchasing. If you are not happy with your illuminator there will be a restocking fee because they are built to order.

6. If you want to have the ability to freeze the color wheel on a certain color, you can have an electrician wire a switch.

7. Be aware of halogen illuminators at deep discounts. There is a big difference in lumen output between halogen and metal halide light bulbs.

8. Before you make a purchase, talk to a person who is very familiar with fiber optics.  In some cases, it might be a better choice going with led lights instead because of light output and cost.

9. Make sure you check the UL listing on the illuminator if it will be placed outdoors. There are a lot of illuminators that are only UL rated for indoor use. Again, speaking with a person who has detailed knowledge can help.
