Just as I predicted on March 26th, 2007 in a earlier post, Color Kinetics is being purchased by a major lighting manufacturer. As far as the industry is concerned I think this is good news overall. Phillips has the manufacturing power that Color Kinetics never possessed and I would expect the price of LED lighting products to drop over the course of the next year which is a good thing for consumers. It will be very interesting to see how Phillips wraps color kinetics distributors into their portfolio since most distributors are highly trained professionals when it comes to led lighting products. Nick Neisen contacted me a few months ago wanting to do something different for their banquet room so they could host a variety of events and paint the room with lights to set the atmosphere. The other day when I was looking around at different products on ebay.com, I was absolutely horrified at looking at sellers on Ebay selling non UL listed led light bulbs. I can not stress this point enough to people, if you break UL listing or put a non UL listed light bulb in your home and your home burns down, the fire investigator finds the non UL listed bulb and puts it in his fire report, your insurance company will not cover the loss in 90% of the cases!  Being in the electrical business for years I have heard of this happening.  Could you really afford to negate your home owners insurance policy potentially costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars?  All to save a few bucks on the initial purchase its not worth the risk.

Here are a few good tips on purchasing led light bulbs. 

1. Never buy direct from an overseas seller unless you are a professional in the business.

2. Look for the advertisement stating UL listing.

3. When you receive the bulb, it should have UL listed on the bulb itself. Look on your average household light bulb you have in your house and you will find it.

4. Know the company your purchasing led light bulbs from.

5. A reputable company will have a manufacturers warranty for their light bulbs. All of the non UL listed bulb will not have a manufacturers warranty. Look for a warranty between 3-5 years.

6. If the manufacturer is not stated in the advertisement, ask who the manufacturer is and ask for their website.  I do not know of any reputable manufacturers who do not have good websites with detailed specifications listed out.

7. Last but not least, ask the experts before you purchase.  Shop around and make some phone calls. Ask for light output information. If they can not provide it, do not buy it because you will more than likely not be happy.

8. Ask about a return policy.
